If we’re looking ahead to the future shape of the Dubai Skyline, you would do well to look over to the saltwaters of Dubai Creek. With plans already established for the largest twin towers in the world, there are further plans for an observation tower that will rival the Burj Khalifa in terms of height.
Dubai Creek has always been the historic focal point of Dubai – this is where trade began with the rest of the world more than a century ago. With historic houses and souks, Dubai Creek is a lively maritime area.
The competition to design the observation tower was won by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The tower will sit at the heart of Emaar’s Dubai Creek Harbour development, and will link with the Harbour’s boardwalk development with shopping malls and leisure facilities as well as dining options.
It isn’t yet known whether the building will be higher than the Burj Khalifa, which is a record 828 metres high, but there are hopes that the design will be innovative and revolutionary.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and Prime Minister of the UAE, said that this “architectural wonder will be as great as the Burj Khalifa and the Eiffel Tower”, while Calatrava said “Dubai is where innovative and revolutionary architecture is making incredible strides. In our proposed design, we have united local traditional architecture with that of the 21st century.”
Dubai Creek Harbour is undergoing something of a facelift. The scheme also includes plans for two rocket-shaped residential towers, which developers say will be the tallest twin towers in the world.
