Dubai has a good standard of public safety, particularly in contrast with other cities of a similar size. Violent crime is extremely rare, however security features are included as standard in much of the accommodation for sale and rental. Gated Communities Gated communities offer a high level of privacy and security, making them a popular choice for many Dubai residents. Most offer a 24-hour security and maintenance service. Security guards also patrol the community, offering peace of mind to residents. In 2014, Nakeel invested a substantial sum in security fencing and gatehouses at three of its communities, Al Furjan, Jumeriah Park and Jumeriah Village Triangle. This transformed all three developments into fully gated communities. The developer described the additional security as part of “our continued commitment to enhancing our developments with a range of new amenities, facilities and services.” Emmar Properties has developed more than 10 gated communities in Dubai, including Springs, Lakes, Greens and Emirates Hills. The developer describes these as ‘integrated lifestyle communities’, which aim to bring together residential property with state of the art retail and leisure facilities. Developments are designed to meet ‘all modern requirements of residents within secure, well-maintained gated communities’. Entry Cards In addition to the patrols, some communities also require an access card to enter. These include the Nakheel communities of Jebel Ali. This offers an extra layer of security, designed to prevent anyone unauthorised entering the community. Previously, security guards would allow some familiar residents to access. However, now guards in many communities are not allowed to let anyone enter without a card. Apartment Buildings It’s not just the gated communities that offer strong security in Dubai, many apartment buildings also benefit from state of the art security. A 24-hour concierge and security service come as standard in most apartment blocks, some buildings also have additional key codes for elevators and internal doors. Security is notoriously tight in many residential buildings in Dubai Marina, with strict entry systems and 24 hour CCTV. This offers residents the ultimate in secure living, within easy reach of the area's multiple attractions.
