Considering living to Dubai?

One of the very first things you’ll need when arriving in Dubai is a local SIM card. Whether you’re relocating for work, studying, or simply spending an extended stay in the city, having access to reliable mobile data and calls is essential.

Fortunately, the process is straightforward, but there are a few things you should know before you get started.

Do you need a local SIM?

While roaming with your home network may seem convenient, it becomes expensive very quickly. Local providers in Dubai offer cost-effective packages for calls, texts, and data, making day-to-day life easier, from ordering a taxi to accessing your banking apps.

Dubai’s mobile service providers

Dubai has three main telecom operators:

Etisalat by e&: The largest and oldest provider, known for its wide coverage.

Du: Popular for competitive pricing and packages tailored to residents and visitors.

Virgin Mobile UAE: A digital-first option where most services are app-based, making it convenient for tech-savvy users.

All three are regulated by the UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), so you can expect high-quality service across the board.

What do you need to get a SIM card?

Getting a SIM card in Dubai requires identification, as all numbers are registered to the user. The process usually takes only a few minutes. You’ll need:

  • Your passport (with valid UAE entry stamp).
  • Your Emirates ID, if you already have it.

For tourists, a visit visa is acceptable, and many kiosks are set up at the airport for immediate SIM registration.

Where can you buy your SIM?

At the airport: Both Etisalat and du have kiosks in the arrivals area at Dubai International Airport. Many travellers find this the easiest option, as you can set up your SIM the moment you land.

In malls and official stores: All major malls and shopping districts have Etisalat, du, or Virgin Mobile shops.

Online apps: Virgin Mobile UAE allows you to order a SIM through their app, which is delivered to your location within hours.

Types of plans

You can choose between prepaid and postpaid:

Prepaid: Perfect for tourists, short-term residents, or those who want flexibility. You pay in advance and can top up as needed.

Postpaid: Best for long-term residents. These plans are billed monthly and often include perks such as extra data or discounted international calling.

Packages vary in terms of data allowances, local minutes, and international calling rates, so it’s worth comparing providers based on your specific needs.

Costs to expect

Tourist SIMs typically start at around AED 50–100 and include a set amount of data and minutes.

Resident plans can range from AED 100 per month for basic usage to AED 300+ for high-data or premium bundles.

Tips for a smooth setup

Carry your passport at all times when setting up your SIM, it’s required for registration.

If you plan to stay long-term, transition to a postpaid plan once you have your Emirates ID.

Keep your old SIM card safe if you need access to international banking or OTPs from your home country.

Consider checking coverage maps if you’re moving to a specific community, although coverage is generally excellent across Dubai.
